Home Painting Steps

- Choosing the right product
- Cost & Quantity Calculation
- Choosing Colors, Textures & Patterns
- Buy the paint & get started
1. Choosing the right product:
The first step is to create a vision for the interior of your room. Observe the things carefully and write down about colors, area, windows, glass and everything you need to take care while painting. Like you apply light colors to any kind of room but the dark color requires rooms with windows and natural light. Write down all the necessary things or you can consult with a professional guide also.
2. Cost & Quantity Calculation:
After choosing the colors, you have to measure the area you need to paint. Measure the height and width of each wall and also calculate the size of every window or door. Keep a detailed list of measurements with you. Measurements will help you to calculate the amount of paint you will need. If you are planning to apply more than one color, then measure the coverage area for each color and estimate the amount of paint you need.
After finalizing colors and taking all the measurements, you have to make a proper budget. The cost of paints depends upon price, quality, and quantity of the product. If you want to know more about the cost of painting you can read: Cost calculation of Home Painting. After reading this you will be able to calculate the cost of your interior painting.
3. Choosing Colors, Textures & Patterns:
After finalizing the product you want to use, you have to choose the right color and patterns according to your home. Choose a paint color that goes with your furniture & décor. Choosing a right color can be difficult for you. Before choosing the color you have to decide first where you want the attention in a room to go. If you want more attention to walls then go for bold colors. And is you apply bold colors on the walls everything else in the room should be neutral so that you don’t end up with too many things competing.
4. Buy Paint & Get Started
Now you can start painting but before that apply the layers of primer to remove all the unevenness from the walls. Usually, people use white primer coat to remove irregularities from the wall. Applying primer will give a smooth look and evenness to the wall. Primer makes the wall surface uniform.
After applying primer, let it dry and start applying the layers of paint according to your choice. Now, you are done with the painting. Just let it dry and enjoy the warmth of your new room.
Painting Process
Painting is a long process and you need to decide on which surface you need to apply paint. You can choose different colors & patterns for different surfaces.
Exterior Walls
Before starting painting with the exterior undertake repairs of the wall imperfections. Start with filling up the cracks in the wall with 1:3 ratio of cement & sand mixture. Avoid applying putty or filling compound while painting exterior surfaces. Check all the external pipes and fittings to get to know about rusting or leakage. Skilled masonry or waterproofing work on the ceiling will enhance the performance of the painted surfaces.
Newly plastered surfaces must be allowed to cure for at least 35 to 45 days before painting. If you want that paint lasts for a longer time then the surface to be painted should be free from dust, grease & any loose materials. Remove any fungal or algae by brushing it with the wire brush & then clean the surface with bleaching powder solution in the water.
Interior Walls
Before starting with the interior painting check the surface for any dampness or water seepage. If there is any problem with the seepage then rectify it only then start painting. Remove the loose plaster from the walls if any. You can check for the loose plaster by tapping on the walls if a hollow sound comes that means there is a loose plaster.
Masonry work is to be undertaken to fill up all cracks and repair broken plaster. Remove loose particles & paint flakes before painting. Scrape with sandpaper to make sure that the surface is dry and free form dust or dirt.
Metal Surfaces
Make sure the metal surface should be free from dust, dirt, grease and any kind of moisture. You can cover the area that you don’t want to paint by using masking tape or paper. Sand the surface with the emery papery to make it clean. For non-ferrous metal surfaces like aluminum, galvanized iron, tin etc., apply a coat of etching primer.
Wooden Surfaces
Remove the dust with the help of sandpaper from the previously painted wooden surfaces. Apply the wood primer by brushing after thinning. Leave the surface to dry for at least 6-8 hours before applying any putty. Now the wooden surface is ready for painting with the top coat.
Painting Tips
Exterior Walls
Exterior surfaces with a horizontal shape like awnings, chajjas, terrace borders, etc. should be given one additional coat for better protection as these areas are prone to water accumulation. Do not apply interior primer, putty or plaster of Paris on the exterior surface. If you apply interior surfaces items to the exterior surface then it will affect the performance of the paint.
If you are going with the new surfaces that they must be coated with one additional coat of self-priming with water. The ratio of water & primer should be 1:1. Cement coating has to be done within 2 hours of mixing with water. After the coating and after 4 hours of drying, curing with water has to be done 2 – 3 times a day for one coat.
Interior Walls
If you are going for darker shades under the interior then apply an additional coat to conceal the darker shades completely. The actual shade, especially for darker shades, will be visible only after the film is dry. It cannot be identified either in the can or in the wet state.
Solvent-based paints (those using thinner other than water) should be allowed twice the drying time than given here in case of high-humidity climate like monsoons. You can apply putty to make the surface smoother but it has to be sandwiched between 2 coats of primer.
Paint Application
The choice of paint application is different for different types of finishes. A finish formulated for compressed air spraying is suitable for compressed air hot-spraying or airless spraying by adjustment with thinner.
Brushing is the oldest method of applying pant under unlimited variable conditions & situations. Roller coating is most effective on broad or plain surfaces. Hand rolling is done for decorative paintings.
