Different Surfaces

Stenciling can be done on different surfaces such as walls, décor, furniture, and glasses.

Walls

You can do stenciling on walls and give your walls a new look. Make sure the walls are clean before applying any paint through stencils. You can use temporary spray adhesive or painter’s tape to apply the stencil to the walls and a stencil brush to apply the paint. The spray adhesive will keep the stencil in its place. Use a wet towel to clean up your project and you can also use that towel to remove the excess paint from the brush. It’s also a good idea to use the paint color currently on your wall as the first layer of your stencil. The first layer is most likely to bleed underneath and will be much less noticeable if it’s the same color. Before applying the second layer, you should make sure that the first layer should be completely dry.

Paper

You can also do stenciling on papers also. You can use a stencil brush or ink spray to apply the stencil to your paper.

Canvas

Canvas is the new ideas for the stenciling. First, remove the dust from the canvas by wiping it off from a dampened. Use spray adhesive or painter’s tape to keep the stencil in its place. After then you can use a stencil brush to apply the paint.

Fabric

You can apply stencils on fabrics also but before applying stenciling on fabric, make sure that the fabric you are using is clean and dried. Place a piece of cardboard between the layers of fabric to prevent bleed-through. Use temporary spray adhesive or freezer paper to keep the stencil in its place. Rather than applying a thick layer, you should use several layers of light applications. Leave the fabric for at least 48 hours for the paint to dry.

Tools for Stenciling

You can use the various tools for stenciling:

Stencil Brushes

You can use stencil brush with smaller stencils. These brushes are only meant for stenciling. A stencil brush has a flat top which is perfect for dabbing at the edge of the stencil to reduce the paint from seeping underneath. The bristles of stencil brushes are very stiff which makes them less likely to slide underneath the stencil. When using the stencil brush make sure to evenly distribute the paint on the brush.

Stencil Roller

Stencil rollers are a quicker way to do stenciling. Roller will be more helpful for stencils when you are applying stenciling over a large surface area. The stencil roller is made up of a dense foam. Make sure the normal rollers cannot be used for stenciling, they will not give you the clean result.
